POSITION SUMMARY:
The Lifeguard’s first and foremost responsibility is to prevent accidents from occurring in and around the pool. YMCA Lifeguards must respond appropriately to accidents and incidents, performing water rescues, CPR and first aid as needed and enforcing Pool Rules and Y policies. The Lifeguard must remain alert and be prepared at all times.
Swim Instructor teaches participants how to swim using the appropriate skills and techniques, working with each child individually within a group setting. Instructors are responsible for teaching proper skill development and safety, and for creating lesson plans as an essential part of the teaching process. The YMCA Aquatics Program nurtures the development of children by providing a safe place to learn foundational skills, develop healthy, trusting relationships, and build self-reliance through the Y’s values of caring, respect, responsibility and citizenship.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Current YMCA or American Red Cross Lifeguard certification and American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification or can be held within 6 months of hire.
2. 1-2 years Lifeguard and Swim Instructor experience preferred.
3. Successful water skills test prior to hire.
4. Ability to plan and deliver class curriculum.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Maintains active surveillance of the pool area.
2. Maintains accurate records required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code.
3. Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
4. Checks the pool for hazardous conditions upon arrival.
5. Teaches all classes in alignment with training and the guidelines set by the Aquatics Director, providing a fun and productive swim lesson each class.
6. Abides by the Aquatics Department Manual policies and procedures, including emergency procedures.
7. Maintains constant supervision of assigned area and notes any signs of danger.
8. Records daily attendance of all students and keeps rosters organized.
9. Attends all staff meetings and in-service trainings.
STATUS/HOURS: PT 20-25 hrs a week
SALARY/PAY RATE: $10.50-$12.50 an hour
