POSITION SUMMARY:
The Aquatics Coordinator is responsible for assisting the Associate Director of Aquatics with the safety, delivery, operation and quality of assigned YMCA aquatic programs to the membership and community. The scope of responsibility includes, but is not limited to, program operation and development, staff supervision and development, and member relationship management, acting as Interim Associate Director in the Associate Director’s absence. This position will also act as Head Lifeguard, overseeing the scheduling and development of lifeguard staff.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. A minimum of 2 years’ experience as a lifeguard with at least one (1) year of experience in a lead or head position responsible for staff supervision and training.
2. Current YMCA or American Red Cross Lifeguard certification.
3. Title 22 First Aid, Certified Pool Operator or equivalent, Lifeguard Instructor, CPR and First Aid Instructor certifications preferred.
4. Certification requirements, within 30 days of hire, include: completion of: Child Abuse Prevention; Blood-borne Pathogens and Oxygen Administration.
5. Basic understanding or water chemistry and appropriate chemical levels.
6. Successful water skills test prior to hire.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Ensure accurate and professional delivery of assigned pool areas of responsibility including, but not limited to, lifeguard oversight, lap swim, open swim, pool schedules, desk management, and chemical controls and documentation.
2. Works with the Associate Director of Aquatics to develop and implement programs based on target market, association strategic plan and community needs.
3. Provide supervision and leadership to all aquatics employees with the main focus on lifeguard staff.
4. Trains and conditions all Lifeguards and Swim Instructors on the Aquatics Manual.
5. Assists in observing and retraining of Lifeguards/Swim Instructors. Ensure lifeguards are 100% rescue ready prior to being put on deck and interacting with members.
6. Assists in the development and operation of the Swim Lessons and Lifeguards.
7. Schedule yourself on deck for a minimum of 4 hours per week.
8. Arrives at work consistently on time, in proper uniform, and prepared to perform the essential functions of the job.
9. Adheres to the substitution policy: Lifeguards are responsible for finding their own substitutes for any planned time off, ensuring that shifts are covered, and informing the Director of substitutions.
10. Maintains active surveillance of the pool area.
11. Knows all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
12. Completes related reports as required.
13. Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
14. Maintains accurate records required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code.
15. Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
16. Checks the pool for hazardous conditions upon arrival.
17. Performs chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate action.
