LIFEGUARD POSITION SUMMARY:
The Lifeguard is responsible for the guarding and safety of members and program participants within all
aquatic facilities. He/she will be responsible for carrying out and enforcing aquatic policies and
procedures in compliance with statutes as described by the State of Delaware, the YMCA of the USA, and
the YMCA of Delaware. Deliver excellent service to all members, guests, and program participants.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Minimum of 16 years of Age
2. Have thorough knowledge of enforcing aquatic procedures, pool rules, emergency procedures,
and basic pool maintenance procedures.
3. Must have current license in Ellis Lifeguarding, National Safety Council CPR, and First Aid
including the use of AED and supplemental oxygen
4. Steward’s of Children & Understanding Health Seekers within 6 months of employment.
5. Must be able to communicate well, have good human relation skills, and have a general
knowledge of office routines.
6. Must be friendly and able to communicate well verbally and in writing, be able to handle several
functions at once, think in the abstract, solve problems, make decisions, be flexible, instruct,
evaluate, and remember.
7. Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic
segments of the community
8. Basic knowledge of computers
PHYISCAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Maintain the physical requirements necessary to maintain Ellis license in Lifeguarding, CPR and
First Aid.
2. Remain alert, with no lapses of consciousness, including observing all areas of the pool
environment.
3. Sit in an elevated chair or stand at the pool edge for extended periods of time.
4. Have 20/25 or 20/25 corrected vision. If corrected vision, agree to always wear corrective lens
or lenses to assure 20/25 vision while on duty.
5. Verbal communication, including projecting the voice across distances, as well as hear noises and
distress signals.
6. Participating in work activities which may include, but are not limited to, the following: standing,
sitting, walking, climbing, stooping, squatting, bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing,
grasping, work requiring visual acuity, and performing all necessary rescue and survival skills.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Lifeguard – 16 years of age & older
1. Member service and their safety is the number one priority.
2. Consistently enforce pool rules at all times with courtesy and fairness.
3. Be responsible for the rescue and emergency care of a victim when an incident does occur and fill out
an accident report.
4. Inspect the pool, pool area, equipment and supplies and report problems to supervisor.
5. Test pool water at specified times and record the readings on daily log sheet.
6. Attend all trainings and/or meetings as scheduled.
7. When on duty, always have on your person the following items: Whistle, Rescue Tube, Pocket Mask,
Gloves, identifiable lifeguard shirt and modest bathing suit (altering of issued company uniforms
is prohibited)
8. Electronic devices (i.e cell phones, gaming devices, tablets, etc) and conversations while on active
duty are not permitted for the safety of all guests.
9. Never leave the pool unguarded for any reason.
10. Perform full zone bottom checks during all guard rotations.
11. Participate in all in-service trainings required to maintain Ellis License, as well as read and
understand department procedures outlined in Best Practices & Emergency Action Plan Manuals.
12. Close the pool if conditions are unsafe and alert supervisor immediately.
13. Use employee time clock to log in and out of each shift.
