PURPOSE OF POSITION: Direct lifeguard staff and perform the duties of Lifeguard. Maintain proper pool chemistry and monitor operating equipment. Ensure a clean, safe aquatics facility.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: In a lead capacity, train, schedule, determine work to be performed, assign and review work, provide input in the hiring and performance evaluation of crew, and participate in duties of assigned crew.
Respond to various questions, resolve problems and provide technical assistance to lifeguards and the public that arise at the pool.
Make recommendations regarding annual budget for operating needs and costs as requested. Research and develop specifications for equipment purchases; estimate costs of proposed work; purchase materials as necessary within budgetary guidelines.
When the Supervisor is not available, ensure that minimum compliance requirements are met, information is given/received to/from the Director and meet established deadlines or obligations.
Act as on-site supervisor for day-to-day operations when the Community Center Director or Parks and Recreation Director are not present. Ensure security of aquatics facility and Community Center.
Direct customers and lifeguards in safe practices in the pool, locker rooms, rock climbing wall and gymnasium.
Maintain swimming pool by cleaning and adding chemicals as needed to maintain proper pool chemistry. Take filter readings and check pumps and operating equipment as scheduled or necessary. Check for and correct safety problems, advise Directors of issues needing attention and/or correction. Identify issues needing repair or maintenance.
Maintain accurate and timely records on pool operations.
Perform aquatics instruction and lifeguard duties as needed and instructed.
Provide front counter assistance as needed. Follow all Community Center financial procedures and policies.
Use Microsoft Word and Excel, KRONOS and other City programs and systems (ActiveNet) to perform job duties. This includes using the City’s e-mail system to engage in appropriate and professional communications internally and externally as needed to perform job duties.
Maintain professional, respectful, productive and cooperative working relationships with City staff, other organizations and the general public.
Follow all safety rules and procedures for work areas. Correct and/or report unsafe conditions to appropriate personnel.
Other related duties as assigned.
AUXILIARY JOB FUNCTIONS: Provide assistance to other staff as workload and staffing levels dictate. Maintain proficiency by attending training and meetings, reading materials, and meeting with others in areas of responsibility. Maintain work areas in a clean and orderly manner.
JOB QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS: Equivalent to High School education plus additional specialized training, including more than two years of Lifeguard and pool operations experience, or any satisfactory combination of experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the above duties. Considerable knowledge of pool operations, water safety, lifesaving and swim instruction methods, first aid and emergency procedures, practices and trends of aquatic facility maintenance, laws governing the operation of a public swim center and weight and water fitness programs and methods. Knowledge of safety related to both pool and fitness equipment. Must have excellent communication, customer service, computer and leadership skills.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/LICENSES: Possession of Certified Pool Operator (CPO) and/or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) certificate, American Red Cross Basic Lifeguard Training Certification and/or, a current American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer card or the ability to obtain one within six months of appointment and the ability to maintain one throughout employment. The ability to obtain and maintain certification to enter confined spaces and/or wear a respirator while performing some duties is also required.
DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS: Previous experience in the operation of an aquatics facility. Previous leadership experience.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF POSITION: While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand, sit, bend, stoop, swim, communicate, reach and manipulate objects, tools or controls. The position requires mobility and visual acuity. Duties involve moving materials weighing up to 10 pounds on a regular basis such as files, books, office equipment, etc., and infrequently moving weight equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Movement of chemical cylinders may require rolling cylinders weighing 250 pounds. Bags of chemicals are moved two or three times monthly and may weigh 50 or 100 pounds (only 75 pounds may be lifted at a time). Movement of exercise/fitness equipment is assisted and would typically not exceed frequency or weight indicated above. Manual dexterity and coordination are required less than 50% of the work period while operating equipment such as cash register, calculator, calibration equipment and other standard office, Lifeguard and fitness equipment. May be required to work weekends and evenings.
WORKING CONDITIONS: The majority of the work period is spent within the Aquatic Center, which includes high humidity, chlorine odors and exposure to pool chemicals and disinfectants. Also includes entry of confined spaces.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Provides instruction and direction to Lifeguards. Responsible for general supervision of other Community Center staff when Community Center Director or Parks & Recreation Dirctor are not on site.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the direction of the Community Center Director.
